My (short) story

I had normal hearing for the first 27 years of my life, and then fluctuating hearing for the next three. I had ‘deaf days’ and ‘hearing days’ during 2007 and 2008, but became severely-profoundly deaf at the end of 2008. At that point, I started relying on a blend of lipreading, written messages and calculated guesswork to communicate. Hearing aids could no longer help me. I had a sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, supposedly caused by an autoimmune condition. My left ear was ‘totally deaf’ and the right ear was ‘severely to profoundly deaf’. The condition began in February 2007. In November 2009, I was referred to the Cochlear Implant Clinic in Melbourne. In February 2010, I completed and passed (er … failed!) their assessment tests and was declared a suitable CI candidate.

On the 18th March, 2010, I was simultaneously bilaterally implanted with two Nucleus 5 cochlear implants. Both sides were activated together on the 7th April, 2010. The blog entries tell the rest of the story. :-)
